King Post Bridge – Barnes

Located just west of the town of Barnes in Washington County, the King Post Bridge is a rare architectural gem and a significant relic of early Kansas transportation history. As of 2026, it remains one of the few surviving examples of its kind in the state.

Historical Significance

Constructed in the late 19th century, the bridge is a King Post truss, which is the simplest form of a truss bridge. Historically, this design was common for short spans across creeks and drainage ditches on rural frontier roads.

  • Design: It features a central vertical post (the “king post”) that supports the weight of the deck through a series of diagonal braces.
  • Survival: While most wooden and early iron King Post bridges were replaced by modern steel or concrete structures as agricultural machinery became heavier, this bridge was preserved as a testament to pioneer engineering.
Preservation and Location

The bridge was originally located over a small stream in rural Washington County but was relocated to the City of Barnes to ensure its preservation and provide easier access for visitors.

  • Proximity: It is located one block south of the WPA Bandshell on Highway 9.
