Barnes was originally called Elm Grove when it was founded in 1870.[4] It was renamed Barnes in 1876 in honor of A. S. Barnes, a stockholder of the Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad. It is located 45 minutes north of Manhattan, KS on Kansas Highways 9 and 148.
A great day trip for shopping at the niche stores, which include two antique stores and a year-round Christmas shop. Dine at the Hometown Cafe, featuring meals made from scratch. You don’t want to miss the homemade pies just waiting to be tasted. Don’t pass up the restored I.O.O.F. Park founded in the early 1900’s, featuring the smallest band shell in Kansas built by the WPA in 1939.
Barnes is home to the lighted horse parade, the Saturday evening following Thanksgiving. As well as the Antique and Junque Fest held the 3rd Saturday in August.
